According to Rogier van Heide "design is the most democratic, encouraging and engaging form of art”. In this first episode of Uplighting the City Van der Heide (Zumtobel Group & Amsterdam Light Festival) speaks about the fusion of technology, design and emotion in urban lights.
Rogier van der Heide was the Vice President and Chief Design Officer of Philips Lighting and is part of the Zumtobel Group since 2014. Moreover, Van der Heide is curator of the yearly succesful event the Amsterdam Light Festival; one of Europe’s largest celebrations of light and light art.
In this first episode of Uplighting the City Van der Heide will elaborate on the fusion of technology, design and emotion and on innovation-led design as an enabler of bridging technology and the creation of meaningful, life-enhancing solutions. In his work he tries to assemble the corporate culture with design thinking to create more added value. Keyword is collaboration; as long as you collaborate and realize that empowerment is more important than power, the possibilities of innovation are unlimited. Another keyword in his work is not sustainability, but the ability to sustain. According to Van der Heide, we need to talk about the ability to sustain ourselves and our environment. In order to do this we need to design for a changing world.
