In Europe, the period of great economic and demographic growth is largely over. The physical growth of our urban agglomerations has come to an end. Unlike in Latin America, Asia or Africa, the boundaries of European cities are no longer moving away, but have come to a halt. The book 'The Flexible City' focuses on this transition and will be officially launched during this programme.

In this publication the authors Tom Bergevoet en Maarten van Tuijl widen their methodological analysis from their successful Dutch publication de Flexibele Stad, to the European scale. They present a toolbox that is able to turn the new assignment into a success. European cities are compared, similarities and trends are identified and concrete examples are described in detail. This creates an inspiring handbook for anyone working on the future of the European city: from administrators and policymakers to developers, designers, builders and users.

In this series of 6 events called “the Flexible City”, analyses, methods, instruments and examples of this book will be discussed. Tonight is the first event: the official book launch. This book launch is connected to the start Dutch chairman of the European Union in the first half of 2016. The first copies will be handed out to bottom-up and top-down representatives and the book will come alive. The next 5 events each time a sub-theme of the book will be discussed.

The writers of the Flexible City, the architects Tom Bergevoet and Maarten van Tuijl work at their office temp.architecture.urbanism on architecture, urban planning and research with a focus on urban transformations.

In ‘De flexibele stad.
