Do specific architectural and urban forms affect human behavior or do ‘the human condition’ determines the state of architecture?

Vertical Cities

In this session, we will look at the architectural and psychosociological development of ‘vertical cities’, from 1960s modernist legacies to current inner-city housing trends, as represented in built environments, cinematography, and literature. We will apply some of these ideas to canonical high-rises around the globe and in Amsterdam (Bijlmer, Java, and KNSM-islands).

The paper will be complemented by an afternoon tour of the eastern docklands where we will contrast and compare high and low-density living. The question posed throughout is whether specific architectural and urban forms affect human behavior or whether ‘the human condition’ determines the state of architecture and cities.
